Biography

I help tell the story of CSU's Department of Economics, including purposeful learning, impactful scholarship, and meaningful community engagement. As a part of the College of Liberal Arts, our stories are rooted firmly among disciplines that seek to better understand the human experience.

Before moving to Fort Collins, I lived in Des Moines, Iowa, where I started my career in marketing/communications for some area health and human services organizations. I also taught composition at Des Moines Area Community College from 2013-2019.

Outside of my professional role, I enjoy reading for pleasure, hiking, bowling, baking, and binge-streaming an absurd amount of television.

First Generation Story

I was born into a working-class military family and was the first to graduate from a four-year university. I was always good at school, but when it came to going away to college, my parents and I were figuring a lot of things out as we went. As my senior year approached and I was looking at continuing on into an M.A. program, that's when I felt really in over my head because my family didn't know how to help me. It was hard to accept that I was struggling when everyone around me seemed to know exactly what they were doing and because up until college, so did I. Eventually I learned to ask the amazing graduate program staff for guidance when I was overwhelmed with things like setting up my thesis committee, and then I worked with my advisors to take an extra semester to finish my degree. That day my thesis was accepted and I was approved to graduate, I was so proud and relieved. I hope other first-generation students can hear stories like mine and know that if they're struggling, it is okay to ask for help and that many other people have experienced these same hardships. You can do it, and you don't have to do it alone!
