Calling all CLA Faculty & Graduate Students!

Meet the Director of University Press of Colorado: Darrin Pratt

Friday, September 28th – Noon until 2 p.m.
Lory Student Center – Long’s Peak Room – Room 302

The past decade has been a very exciting and tumultuous time in scholarly publishing. Against a backdrop of declining sales for scholarly monographs in the humanities & social sciences (HSS), ebooks arrived with a bang in 2007 (Amazon launched the first e-ink Kindles) and Open Access (OA) digital publishing—a movement that originated in the journals arena—is gaining traction in the book publishing space. For HSS scholars who have to publish books for tenure & promotion, what does this all mean?

Join Darrin Pratt, Director of the University Press of Colorado (UPC) for a discussion of current trends in academic publishing, including the impact of ebooks and OA initiatives, as well as an overview of what scholarly publishers are looking for and how authors can improve their chances of publication. In addition, Darrin will discuss career paths in scholarly publishing for students who may want to stay involved with the academic world without actually becoming an academic.

Darrin Pratt has been Director of UPC since 2000, and he is a past President of the Association of
University Presses (2016-2017). In addition to a unique collaborative venture between University Press of Colorado and Utah State University Press, UPC has publishing partnerships with CSU’s Center for Literary Publishing and the Colorado State University Open Press/WAC Clearinghouse.

Snacks, lemonade, iced tea and coffee will be supplied by the CLA Dean’s Office

Facilitated by Michael Carolan, Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Affairs, College of Liberal Arts
