“Toxic positivity” is an everyday term that has gained popularity since the pandemic; Colloquially, toxic positivity is a phenomenon where individuals are criticized because of their relentless positive emotions. Toxic positivity presents a challenge for philosophers studying emotion: what’s wrong with feeling positive? I think ethicists should work on understanding toxic positivity because it is being used as a new form of ethical criticism; when someone is acting toxically positive they are acting ethically badly.
