2024 Clarinet Composers Festival: Mangani Mania!

Mangani Mania!

A celebration of the clarinet compositions of living composers, this year’s event features the many works of Italian guest artist, Michele Mangani who will be a major part of the celebration. Highlights of the festival include Mangani’s talk on his compositional process and the pieces being performed on the festival concerts.

Middle/high school students begin the morning with a mini-clarinet camp, which includes lessons and topic classes provided by current CSU clarinet students. Following the lunch hour, all regional clarinetists are invited to join in and participate in the festival clarinet choir, conducted by Michele Mangani himself. Popular music and clarinet vendors will be present and open all afternoon for clarinetists to try out and purchase various equipment and supplies.

2024 Guest Artist Michele Mangani pictured conductingThe first concert featuring Mangani’s clarinet works begins at 4 p.m., with performances from the talented clarinet students and faculty of Colorado State University, as well as a performance by the aforementioned festival clarinet choir. Following the dinner break, the festival concludes with an evening recital at 7:30 p.m. in the beautiful Organ Recital Hall. In total, over 20 of Mangani’s works comprising of solo, chamber, concerto, and clarinet choir will be performed at the ManganiMania festival. 2024 Guest Artist Michele Mangani pictured conductingMichele Mangani was born in Urbino (Italy), graduated from the Conservatory “Gioachino Rossini” of Pesaro in Clarinetto, Band Instrumentation, Composition and Orchestral Conducting, and from the Conservatory “GB Martini” of Bologna in Choral Music and Choir conducting. In 1996 won the National Contest for Master Director of the Italian Army National Band. He received a lot of National and International prizes and he is one of the most appreciated Italian composers.

His compositions had been played and recorded around the world by different interpreters, orchestras and bands as: Corrado Giuffredi solo clarinet of the Italian Symphonic Orchestra from Switzerland, Fabrizio Meloni solo clarinet of the Orchestra of the Theater and the Scala Philharmonic, Calogero Palermo solo clarinet of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from Amsterdam, Wenzel Fuchs Philharmoniker Berliner Orchestra main clarinet, Patrick De Ritis, 1° soloist bassoon of the Symphonic Orchestra from Wien, Ricardo Morales, main clarinet of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Italian National Army Band, the Italian Navy Band, the Financial Guard Military Band, the Symphonic of the Bulgarian Radio, the Philharmonic Orchestra from Bruxelles, The National Juvenile Orchestra from Spain, the Sinfonietta Orchestra from Losanna, the wind Octet of the Scala Theatre.

In recent years he has been commissioned to create new compositions, premiered in various countries around the world, including: 2012 Verdiana, fantasy for clarinet and orchestra in Ghent – Belgium; 2015 Concertpiece for two clarinets and band in Rome Parco della Musica Italia; 2015 Rossiniana fantasia for clarinet and orchestra in Madrid – Spain; 2017 Concert for bass clarinet and orchestra in Tampere – Finland; 2018 Concert for clarinet and band in Ostend – Belgium; 2019 Three Latin dances for clarinet orchestra in Lima – Peru; 2019 Dance Variations for clarinet orchestra in Portland – USA; 2019 Dance Variations version for clarinet and piano in Lanzhou – China. 2020 Raphael Symphony n.1 for orchestra in Urbino – Italy. 2021 Sunrise and Homage to Astor Piazzola, for wind ensemble in Milan Teatro alla Scala – Italy 2022 Concerto n.2 for clarinet and band Cilea Theater Reggio Calabria – Italy. 2023 Clariquintet for clarinet and string quartet in Denver Oregon USA.

His musical production still amounts to over 1000 pieces including transcriptions and original compositions, for chamber ensembles, band, orchestra and choir, of which approximately 600 are published by Edizioni Musicali Eufonia. His works are often included as compulsory pieces in performance competitions, where he is often invited as commissioner or president of the jury.

Since 2012 he has collaborated as a member of the artistic commission and as director and arranger, with the Gioachino Orchestra, youth orchestral formation to the province of Pesaro and Urbino. He is the artistic director of the Wind Orchestra of Marche and Professor of music for wind instruments at G. Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro. Since 2017, he has been the artistic director of the Academy of the “Cappella Musicale del SS. Sacramento” of Urbino.
