Why CSU

"I grew up in Fort Collins and have always been a Ram! Both of my parents are professors at CSU, so I grew up on campus. I've been attending the Rams football and volleyball games since I was a baby and have dreamed of playing in the marching band for as long as I can remember. Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

I am a member of the Blake Leadership Scholars program and have formed such a wonderful bond with my fellow Blake peers! This enriching opportunity provides us with so many support networks and really helps us develop into successful students and well-rounded individuals. I am also a part of the Honors program, which allows me to take Honors-level seminars and live in the Academic Village Honors dorm. I spend a lot of the time in the University Center for the Arts, where I play trombone in ensembles like Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, and Marching Band. These groups are so much fun and are a great way to improve my playing and meet new people. I'm also a part of the Trombone Studio, where I take weekly lessons and participate in trombone choirs and quartets.

Why did you choose CSU

From the first day I toured CSU, I knew it was a place I could succeed at right away. I saw sidewalk chalk advertising "campus wide capture the flag" and other clubs/games all around the sidewalks of campus. It felt like an incredibly vibrant and active community which was exactly what I was looking for. When I heard about the Blake Leadership Scholar program, my decision to come here was only strengthened! CSU is a very inclusive environment, and I appreciate the way I am able to be myself without any fear of judgment. Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

While I am a scholar for our Blake Leadership program, I am also involved in several other extracurriculars and academic engagement opportunities at CSU. I am a coordinator for our ESports program (both casual and competitive), where I run tryouts, schedule games, and am an active player on the team for my specific game I coordinate. Through this, we play other colleges, host events, and occasionally have travel opportunities. I am also involved in our Honors program, where I attend a honors seminar 3 times a week, as well as go to other engagement opportunities. I am a part of the Community for Excellence, where I go to events to ensure my success as a first generation student at CSU. Lastly, I am an active member of the Economics Student Leadership Council here at CSU.

I am in the Blake Leadership Scholars Program, a leadership-oriented seminar, foundation, and community that has already fostered a deep understanding in how I can make myself a better leader. We'll learn about how to manage our time to maximize efficiency, how to communicate within several different settings, and how to lead a group of people, as well as ourselves, to make the world a better place. I'm so excited to see what the next four years will bring.

During orientation and RamWelcome, I loved how there were a large range academic and diversity centers. In my first few weeks, I already utilized the Pride Center, APAAC Office, Writing Center, and more. Also, I chose CSU because I resonated with it's principles of community, especially inclusion, respect, and social justice.

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

I am involved in the Honors program, the Blake Leadership Scholar program, and the Asian Pacific American Cultural Center (APAAC) peer-mentor program. Firstly, I became interested in the Honors program due to their close-knit community and seminar-based curriculum. Throughout my education, a smaller and discussion-based curriculum has been more beneficial for me, as it allows me to engage with learning material and ask questions rather than being talked at and having information go over my head. Secondly, I was interested the Blake Leadership program because I resonated with their mission purpose to seek value in a liberal arts education and utilize it for community leadership. As an English major, I feel like literature, storytelling, and words are perhaps some of the most powerful tools humanity ever utilized. I want to use them to become a leader for my communicate and advocate for positive change in the world. Finally, I am a mentee for APAAC's peer-mentor program because I only began to develop a connection with fellow South Asians in my teen years, and I wanted to expand on that connection in my college years.

"While exploring college options, I decided to visit CSU's Lory Student Center: I wandered across the halls, and for once, I had the feeling that I wasn't out of place; I felt in my gut, as I saw the diversity of students and cultural centers, that here my last name wouldn't be labeled 'exotic,' here my heritage wouldn't be a 'hindrance,' and here my identity would be embraced without judgment and seen as a strength. Why did you choose CSU

Being an immigrant wasn't always part of my identity, but it is something that once it appeared, it became omnipresent, spreading and saturating every aspect of my life. As I grew up, nurtured by different cultures, languages, and places, I was fortunate to develop a net of relationships that allowed me to create my own "home," regardless of how many miles away it was from actual home; however, the same experiences that have made me stronger and adaptable, have also deprived me, at various points in time, of a sense of familiarity and welcoming that one expects from locals to offer to newcomers. Exchanging the warm oceans and salty air of my tropical homeland, for the beautifully imposing mountains and roaring rivers of Colorado, was one of the most terrifying steps I took in my life; nevertheless, the people of Fort Collins and its communities, with the help of some warm coffee or tea, sometimes make the negative-digits weather feel as warm as an August night. While exploring college options, I decided to visit CSU's Lory Student Center: I wandered across the halls, and for once, I had the feeling that I wasn't out of place; I felt in my gut, as I saw the diversity of students and cultural centers, that here my last name wouldn't be labeled "exotic," here my heritage wouldn't be a "hindrance," and here my identity would be embraced without judgment and seen as a strength. Finally, as a student and a person, I felt at home.

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

Currently, I have just begun my journey with the Blake Leadership Scholars program, where I have delved into the meanings of leadership, and have meet a diverse group of people from whom I cannot wait to learn more about. Additionally, I am part of the Community for Excellence, a CSU program that focuses on facilitating equitable education that foments a sense of belonging for students who may be from minority groups. My current involvements create a fairly short list, but as I settle into the new life-style of college, I will join clubs and groups that allow me to be more deeply involved with my academic and Fort Collins community.

Why did you choose CSU

I chose CSU mainly because of its location but also because of its community. When I had my orientation, I remember being amazed at how beautiful and unique Fort Collins is. It was my first time visiting Fort Collins. I don’t recall that much of that day, but I can truly say that I remember the feeling of being at home, the sense of belonging, and trust. I loved how green and alive the environment felt, and the way that the campus is well organized and thought for students, it made me feel confident with my decision. At that exact moment, I thought about how wonderful it would be If I graduate -in four years- as a RAM. Besides that, I also perceived a sense of strong community, it seemed everyone knew each other, and I noticed how big and diverse their community is. Also, it caught me the way CSU promotes its events, sports, and clubs. I liked how CSU is very supportive and inclusive because that’s something that is important to me. Something more that I would like to add is that I had many reasons why I chose CSU, one main of those reasons was that I wanted to challenge myself, I wanted to be more responsible and independent, and I knew that being far away from home would not be easy, but I knew that it was the right moment to put academic life first and my future.

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

The semester has just begun and many opportunities have come to me and I’m so excited to be more involved on campus. This year I’m engaged in one of the students' organizations organized by El Centro (one of the cultural departments that provide support for the Latinx community at CSU and Fort Collins). One of the group leaders, which is called the Central/South American/Caribbean meetup, focuses on encouraging students from many different parts of America to help them in academic success, cultural pride, empowerment, and volunteer/leadership opportunities via weekly meetings. I’m also part of the Blake Leadership Scholars Program. Its main focus is to challenge and promote a good sense of community and leadership skills giving opportunities to incoming first-year students who are part of the College of Liberal Arts. It consists of a one-credit course that will help them to succeed and develop good skills for further academic challenges and professional opportunities. I just started volunteering for KCSU. It is a Colorado State University that is non-commercial, student-run. I’m volunteering for the promotions and music department. I will be able to help with social media or designing show covers that will be featured on their app and website and with music helping with album reviews, concert reviews, and sorting through some of their music submissions. Lastly, I have proposed to myself to try something different this year, so I’ve decided to be part of the K-POP dance club. A club designed to learn about K-POP and Korean culture, learn choreographies, and build a community for K-POP lovers.

I am also in the Theatre Mentor Program as I lead and connect with three students new to the department to aid them in getting on the right track during their time here. Perhaps most of all, the scholarship opportunities at CSU—such as that offered by the Blake Leadership Scholars program—are what allowed me to enroll in classes outside of my primary with less hesitation about the cost of college courses.

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

One of the areas where I am most involved at CSU is the School of Music, where I play the bass in ensembles such as the symphony orchestra, the opera orchestra, and chamber groups. As a music minor, I also participate in double bass studio and lessons. I enjoy participating in CSU’s music program because provides me with the opportunity to creatively express myself. Moreover, my participation in CSU’s music programs has helped me to grow as a collaborator and section leader. In addition to my participation in music ensembles, I also am involved in the Blake Leadership Scholars program, where I engage in mentorship, service, professional development, and community building with other students in the School of Liberal Arts.

Why CSU

"I chose CSU because it was the first school I toured that gave me a real sense of community... I was also interested in going out of state (as I am originally from California) and CSU offered the easiest transition, especially during the pandemic. I always knew where to go if I needed help and everyone was always ready to lend a hand. Ram’s take care of ram’s, after all!"

Why did you choose CSU

I chose CSU because it was the first school I toured that gave me a real sense of community. While I wasn’t able to visit in person during my senior year of high school, I could tell from the way students and faculty talked about the school that CSU is a great school to meet people and build a network within and outside your major. I was also interested in going out of state (as I am originally from California) and CSU offered the easiest transition, especially during the pandemic. I always knew where to go if I needed help and everyone was always ready to lend a hand. Ram’s take care of ram’s, after all!

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

Currently most of my time is split between academics and work. I am currently a student employee at Ram’s Horn Dining Hall where I am responsible for a variety of tasks including preparing and serving food, working the cash register, and making sure students have an overall pleasant dining experience. In my free time, I do some freelance illustration and design work, and I have been working on several commissions over the last year. I am also a member of the Blake Leadership Scholars Junior Cohort, and I have enjoyed building a community with my fellow scholars over the last two years.

Why did you choose CSU

I chose CSU for a few reasons. I knew I wanted to focus on writing, and CSU’s English department offers a unique area of study with the Writing, Rhetoric, and Literacy concentration. Additionally, I fell head over heels in love with Fort Collins. The town itself is so fun and offers lots of coffee shops, restaurants, and other places to explore! Lastly, everyone I met both on and off campus were so nice. This place immediately felt like a welcoming and friendly community. I knew I wanted to be a part of it!

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

I am involved in a few different programs through CSU. For one, I am a Blake Scholar. In this role, I plan service projects, mentor younger students, and attend community events that celebrate the arts. Secondly, I am a College of Liberal Arts Ambassador, meaning I give tours of campus to prospective students and their families. I also work at the Writing Center as a Writing Consultant, guiding all students in all forms of writing. It is very fulfilling work. Similarly, I am a Resident Assistant in the dorms. I foster community and support residents as they start their journey here at CSU.

Blake Scholars Alumni Stories

Corinne Neustadter (B.A. '22)

Fall 2019 Cohort

Corinne Neustadter in Gunnison, Colorado"I'm a writer for Wendover Productions, a digital production company, which has been great! I love digging into new topics and writing videos -- it's been a fun challenge that has built off of and strengthened my research and writing skills already. It's a dream job that I never would've considered, had it not been for my time at CSU and one of my history professors, Dr. Mike Childers.

My time at CSU and within the Blake Leadership Scholars prepared me well for post-college life -- being in seminars with Dr. Zach Hutchins and my classmates empowered me to pursue my passions in college, rather than sideline them in pursuit of a more "productive" major. I realized that majoring in history and political science could be both personally and professionally rewarding, because majoring in these subjects yields skills applicable to a wealth of jobs not restricted to a specific industry or profession.

Being a Blake Leadership Scholar encouraged me to cultivate, then build on my passions throughout college -- first by taking the classes that interested me most (shoutout to History of America's National Parks!) then stepping outside of my comfort zone. I've always loved to write, and the Blake program showed me that it didn't just have to be a hobby -- it could be a part of my college experience both inside and outside of the classroom, which led me to writing for the Collegian, the CSU Libraries, and interning for EYP, a nationwide architecture and engineering firm. Skills don't exist in isolation, and can be intertwined with classes, or clubs, or careers to create a fulfilling college experience that only multiplies your post-grad opportunities."

Micaela Allen (B.A. '23)

Fall 2019 Cohort

Micaela Allen"I am currently serving as the Director of Global Marketing for an online English education platform. The work that we do is purposeful, relational, and deeply rewarding -- I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity to step into this role and to do work in some of the most incredible places on earth! As much as I love the work that I get to do, I also believe that many of the important things in life happen outside of the office. I have the privilege of loving & caring for my husband, our families, our friends, and our church. I can often be found exploring Creation with my husband, making (and eating!) delicious food, and spending time with the young girls I get to mentor.

My four years at CSU were deeply formative. I had the privilege of being a member of the inaugural cohort of Blake Leadership Scholars -- a program which provided me with invaluable relationships and experiences during my time at CSU. It was a grace to be the recipient of the radical generosity of Joe Blake, who believed in me and graciously enabled me to more fully pursue what I felt called to.

Being a part of the CSU community also meant being a part of the Fort Collins community -- something that was an immense gift to me while I was a student. This means that while my time at CSU was marked by incredible opportunities and experiences within the confines of campus, much of my time was spent investing in life and relationships outside of the classroom. I was given several opportunities to spend time overseas while I was a student -- it was these cross-cultural experiences which gave me a heart for the nations and a passion to see lives transformed around the world. It's humbling to see how the educational, vocational, and personal experiences I was given during my time at CSU have all uniquely prepared me for this new season of life."

Peter Wilson (B.A. '23)

Fall 2019 Cohort

Peter Wilson"As of August, I have been living in Lincoln, NE with my fiancee and our cat. My free time has been dedicated to wedding planning! We are getting married this upcoming May, which I am super excited about. I am pursuing an English PhD in Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. My disciplinary focus is in Black literature. I also am a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the English department, which helps to fund my studies. I teach two courses of freshman composition!

My time at CSU prepared me for the PhD program because I was able to work closely with Zach Hutchins, who mentored me as both a Blake scholar and English student. In the summer of 2022 I was Dr. Hutchins' research assistant and got to do archival work at the Stowe center in Hartford Connecticut, an experience that has been very beneficial to my graduate studies, where I now do digital archival research for my own writing. I think some of the networking skills we learned in the Blake program has also been impactful to my studies as I prepare to (eventually) enter the job market."
