Why CSU

"I wanted a school with interesting and exciting program options for me, was affordable for my family, was in a location with a lot going on, had a lot of school spirit, had a large, friendly, and fun student body, and supported neurodivergent students well, and could accommodate my need for adventure. As I narrowed my list, Colorado State survived each cut until it was the only one left. The Blake Program played a significant role in my decision."

Why did you choose CSU

Finding the right college was an exhaustive process for me. I had so many things I wanted in college, and some of these qualities seemed to be the opposites of one another (i.e., being comfortable vs. adventurous). Eventually, I was choosing between schools in my home state of California, New Orleans, Colorado, DC, Paris, and Italy - I was all over the place trying to find a good fit! I wanted a school with interesting and exciting program options for me, was affordable for my family, was in a location with a lot going on, had a lot of school spirit, had a large, friendly, and fun student body, and supported neurodivergent students well, and could accommodate my need for adventure. As I narrowed my list, Colorado State survived each cut until it was the only one left. The Blake Program played a significant role in my decision. The idea of being coached, along with all the opportunities that CSU had to offer, combined with the emphasis on really exploring all that Colorado has to broaden my perspective, was important to me. While visiting CSU, I felt the welcoming and comfortable environment but also loved the study abroad program and adventure that feels natural to the campus. I knew it would give me opportunities to push myself outside my comfort zone and allow me to grow into the best version of myself.

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

I am in the Blake Leadership Scholars Program, which focuses on creating well-rounded students and leaders through seminars and new experiences. This program allows me to explore who I am while building quality relationships with my cohort, professors, and the community. I appreciate the multitude of experiences and opportunities that the program will provide me to broaden my perspective of liberal arts and how important it is to my own happiness and success to be well-rounded. I believe that the program's opportunities and experiences will also give me the knowledge to become a good leader and communicator.

Why CSU

"When I say that Colorado State University is my dream school, I mean it in every aspect of the phrase. I feel that Fort Collins itself is completely distinct. It was a perfect fall day when I took my first tour of the campus, and it’s hard now to get the golden light at the Oval out of my head. Beyond just the beauty of the environment, I love the culture of kindness, passion, and spirit that I’ve experienced so far at CSU. Every interaction I’ve had with an alumni, student, or staff member has left me more excited to be here than before!"

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

This year, I’m participating in various musical ensembles, including the University Symphony Orchestra and Colorado State Marching Band. There I practice leadership by building confidence, skill, and community in myself and in others. Outside of music, through the Blake Leadership Program, I’m meeting regularly with students who share my values and passions to further develop my opportunities for leadership. Learning about others and their leadership styles is vital, and I’m grateful to have the chance to do this through this scholarship program.

I love the mountains and all of the outdoors activities that accompany the place. Overall, CSU was just the right place for me.

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

Being a freshman in college for only five weeks, I have not explored all of CSU’s options for academic engagement though I have been to a few. The main academic programs I am in are the Blake Scholar Program and the honors program. Both programs have provided me with excellent resources and learning opportunities. As a member of the art program here at CSU, I have been looking for some art engagement opportunities to be apart of. Recently, I joined a design team for a mural in the Clark building. I have also found several art clubs and extra studio time that I hope to attend.

Also, I chose CSU because I resonated with it's principles of community, especially inclusion, respect, and social justice.

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

I am involved in the Honors program, the Blake Leadership Scholar program, and the Asian Pacific American Cultural Center (APAAC) peer-mentor program. Firstly, I became interested in the Honors program due to their close-knit community and seminar-based curriculum. Throughout my education, a smaller and discussion-based curriculum has been more beneficial for me, as it allows me to engage with learning material and ask questions rather than being talked at and having information go over my head. Secondly, I was interested the Blake Leadership program because I resonated with their mission purpose to seek value in a liberal arts education and utilize it for community leadership. As an English major, I feel like literature, storytelling, and words are perhaps some of the most powerful tools humanity ever utilized. I want to use them to become a leader for my communicate and advocate for positive change in the world. Finally, I am a mentee for APAAC's peer-mentor program because I only began to develop a connection with fellow South Asians in my teen years, and I wanted to expand on that connection in my college years.

Why did you choose CSU

Being an immigrant wasn't always part of my identity, but it is something that once it appeared, it became omnipresent, spreading and saturating every aspect of my life. As I grew up, nurtured by different cultures, languages, and places, I was fortunate to develop a net of relationships that allowed me to create my own "home," regardless of how many miles away it was from actual home; however, the same experiences that have made me stronger and adaptable, have also deprived me, at various points in time, of a sense of familiarity and welcoming that one expects from locals to offer to newcomers. Exchanging the warm oceans and salty air of my tropical homeland, for the beautifully imposing mountains and roaring rivers of Colorado, was one of the most terrifying steps I took in my life; nevertheless, the people of Fort Collins and its communities, with the help of some warm coffee or tea, sometimes make the negative-digits weather feel as warm as an August night. While exploring college options, I decided to visit CSU's Lory Student Center: I wandered across the halls, and for once, I had the feeling that I wasn't out of place; I felt in my gut, as I saw the diversity of students and cultural centers, that here my last name wouldn't be labeled "exotic," here my heritage wouldn't be a "hindrance," and here my identity would be embraced without judgment and seen as a strength. Finally, as a student and a person, I felt at home.

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

Currently, I have just begun my journey with the Blake Leadership Scholars program, where I have delved into the meanings of leadership, and have meet a diverse group of people from whom I cannot wait to learn more about. Additionally, I am part of the Community for Excellence, a CSU program that focuses on facilitating equitable education that foments a sense of belonging for students who may be from minority groups. My current involvements create a fairly short list, but as I settle into the new life-style of college, I will join clubs and groups that allow me to be more deeply involved with my academic and Fort Collins community.

Another activity that I do is the pre-law club which is very beneficial in planning ahead for my future. Everywhere you go, there is a community or family element, which is crucial to me in these new chapters of my life. Having a group of upperclassmen and mentors as soon as I finished with Ram Welcome week was a treat and provided me with the connections I needed to keep working hard the entire year. Overall, CSU allows me to experiment in my studies and helps grow me into the person I want to be.

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

I am a member of the Honors Program here at CSU, which allows me to take classes at a higher level with smaller class sizes and more discussion-based assignments. The seminars have been great for speaking to other students with different viewpoints and opinions in a safe space to further each other’s knowledge of a topic. I am also honored to be a Blake Leadership Scholar. This program celebrates the leaders in the College of Liberal Arts and provides them with connections and relationships that will be built upon for years to come. In the Theatre department, I am the Event Coordinator of the Student Advisory Council (SAC). Being on this board allows me to be a liaison between the faculty members and the general student body to address concerns and implement real change for the better of all. I am also in the Theatre Mentor Program as I lead and connect with three students new to the department to aid them in getting on the right track during their time here. Being a mentor is a fantastic opportunity to be a friend and resource to these new students, as my mentor was to me. Finally, I am an Ambassador for the College of Liberal Arts. I love being in this position because it grants me the opportunity to go to recruitment events and be a connection for students and parents to the school. Having the possibility of making a difference in someone’s life is what I always strive to do, whether in a big or small way.

I chose CSU because it offers excellent programs that allow me to study both environmental policy and the science of ecosystems. I am also an out-of-state student from Nebraska, so CSU’s welcoming atmosphere on campus helped me feel at home immediately! And of course, nothing is better than having the mountains so close to campus for a hike or a weekend camping trip.

At Colorado State, I am a member of the Blake Leadership Scholars Program and the College of Liberal Arts Ambassadors Team. The Blake program provides opportunities for a small cohort of students to develop their leadership skills, helps them network with faculty on campus, and facilitates a peer mentorship program. On the CLA Ambassadors Team, I help prospective students decide if CSU is the place for them and plug the College of Liberal Arts’ amazing qualities! The ambassadors work Colorado State’s recruitment events, give tours, and table at other involvement activities. Both the Blake program and the Ambassadors Team have helped me develop me leadership skills and build community at CSU.

College represents a time in life when you can truly pursue your passions, explore new learning, and push yourself beyond boundaries, and Colorado State University offered me the chance to do just these things and so much more. I chose CSU because I felt drawn to the stellar faculty I met on my visits to campus and the opportunities within my area of study. I stayed at CSU because of the strong community I built through the Honors College and the Blake Leadership Scholars program. My professors within the College of Liberal Arts and the Honors College truly care about my success and are accessible to me when I have questions, need advice, or to offer an encouraging word. Being part of the CSU Ramily truly means that I have people in my corner who want to see me thriving and succeeding as a student and as a person. Whether I’m studying at Morgan Library, grabbing a snack with friends at the LSC, or cheering on our team at Canvas Stadium, I know “I found my state” at CSU.

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

As a Blake Leadership Scholar, I know that opportunities abound at Colorado State University. During my first year on campus, I took part in the Presidential Leadership Program and participated in the day of service in Fort Collins. This allowed me to learn about local, charitable organizations that support efforts to promote food security, sustainability and conservation efforts, and individuals and families in need. I am in my second year as an Honors College Ambassador, a position that allows me to share the mission and benefits of being part of the Honors community at CSU. I assist with student recruitment efforts and manage the social media accounts for this organization. In addition, I worked with the ambassador team last year to stage the annual “Nerd Prom”. This event provided a place for members of the Honors community to connect, relax, and enjoy a great night together. I also serve as a member of the editorial team for Spiritus Mundi, the literary magazine for the Honors College. I am an active member of the Panhellenic community as a sister of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. I serve as an elected officer and participate in a variety of philanthropic events such as Ram Clean Up, Ram Move In, and Girls on the Run. Finally, I hold a work- study position with the College of Journalism and Media Communications.

Colorado State University’s offering a multitude of opportunities to get involved on campus and in the broader Colorado community has fundamentally shaped my experience in Fort Collins. As a Blake Leadership Scholar, I’ve participated in leadership development, a peer-mentorship program, and community service events. In the English department’s Community Literacy Center, I have interned and now volunteer to facilitate creative writing workshops with historically underserved populations (predominantly people in recovery or experiencing confinement) and create literacy opportunities in the community. Finally, at the Writing Center, I work as a consultant and support students writing goals in various disciplines across campus.

Why did you choose CSU

I chose Colorado State University because from the very first time I set foot on campus it felt like home. My first tour of CSU was an informal tour given by my cousin who also attended school here. I got to see campus buildings and there were dogs all over campus, which I loved. I also felt valued and respected by the people here at CSU. I attended a Choose CSU day and got to meet people from a variety of different departments. I found that each and every person was welcoming and kind, which made me feel comfortable making such a far trip for college. Finally, I love that CSU is situated in such an interesting place. Fort Collins, Horsetooth, and the Poudre Valley have become some of my favorite places and I am so lucky to get to live here.

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

At CSU I am involved with the Blake Leadership Scholars Program. The program has given me the chance to expand my connections at Colorado State and given me a community on campus to get involved with. The Blake Scholars program gives incoming freshman the chance to connect with fellow Liberal Arts majors and learn the ropes of how to take advantage of the opportunities at Colorado State. As a junior in the program, I will have the ability to mentor an incoming freshman and help them get adjusted to life at CSU. We will also have an opportunity to plan and execute a service project in the Fort Collins community this upcoming year.

Why did you choose CSU

I chose CSU because its academic environment and financial aid enabled me to pursue my various academic interests. When I was in high school, I knew that I wanted to pursue a degree in the liberal arts, but I wasn't sure what exactly I wanted to study. The ability to freely take classes in various majors at CSU allowed me to better understand my academic interests. Moreover, programs such as the Blake Leadership Scholars community supported me in developing a wide interest in the liberal arts that isn't limited to one, narrow field. Perhaps most of all, the scholarship opportunities at CSU—such as that offered by the Blake Leadership Scholars program—are what allowed me to enroll in classes outside of my primary with less hesitation about the cost of college courses.

Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

One of the areas where I am most involved at CSU is the School of Music, where I play the bass in ensembles such as the symphony orchestra, the opera orchestra, and chamber groups. As a music minor, I also participate in double bass studio and lessons. I enjoy participating in CSU’s music program because provides me with the opportunity to creatively express myself. Moreover, my participation in CSU’s music programs has helped me to grow as a collaborator and section leader. In addition to my participation in music ensembles, I also am involved in the Blake Leadership Scholars program, where I engage in mentorship, service, professional development, and community building with other students in the School of Liberal Arts.

I chose CSU because it was the first school I toured that gave me a real sense of community. While I wasn’t able to visit in person during my senior year of high school, I could tell from the way students and faculty talked about the school that CSU is a great school to meet people and build a network within and outside your major. I was also interested in going out of state (as I am originally from California) and CSU offered the easiest transition, especially during the pandemic. Describe the leadership or co-curricular academic engagement you are involved with

While I’ve been at CSU, I have been involved with several different leadership roles in several different capacities. As a part of the Honors program, I’ve written my thesis and organized the committee that oversaw this process and was in charge of the largest project of my academic career to date. Through my involvement with CSU’s Panhellenic Council, I helped to form the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion position which oversees sorority life on campus and its accessibility and kindness to all people. I continued DEI work in Kappa Kappa Gamma working directly with my sorority on our efforts to improve and change how sororities operate. All of this wouldn’t have been possible without my involvement in the Blake Leadership Scholars program and the integral classes I had with both the 2020 and 2021 cohorts and the service projects we engaged in together. I’m a TA in a higher-level English class and am also a student teacher candidate, in practicum classes and working my way towards student teaching. Teaching as a form of leadership is a large part of what I’ve taken from my time at CSU and I’m excited to use the skills I’ve been taught for positive change.

Blake Scholars Alumni Stories

Corinne Neustadter (B.A. '22)

Fall 2019 Cohort

Corinne Neustadter in Gunnison, Colorado"I'm a writer for Wendover Productions, a digital production company, which has been great! I love digging into new topics and writing videos -- it's been a fun challenge that has built off of and strengthened my research and writing skills already. It's a dream job that I never would've considered, had it not been for my time at CSU and one of my history professors, Dr. Mike Childers.

My time at CSU and within the Blake Leadership Scholars prepared me well for post-college life -- being in seminars with Dr. Zach Hutchins and my classmates empowered me to pursue my passions in college, rather than sideline them in pursuit of a more "productive" major. I realized that majoring in history and political science could be both personally and professionally rewarding, because majoring in these subjects yields skills applicable to a wealth of jobs not restricted to a specific industry or profession.

Being a Blake Leadership Scholar encouraged me to cultivate, then build on my passions throughout college -- first by taking the classes that interested me most (shoutout to History of America's National Parks!) then stepping outside of my comfort zone. I've always loved to write, and the Blake program showed me that it didn't just have to be a hobby -- it could be a part of my college experience both inside and outside of the classroom, which led me to writing for the Collegian, the CSU Libraries, and interning for EYP, a nationwide architecture and engineering firm. Skills don't exist in isolation, and can be intertwined with classes, or clubs, or careers to create a fulfilling college experience that only multiplies your post-grad opportunities."

Micaela Allen (B.A. '23)

Fall 2019 Cohort

Micaela Allen"I am currently serving as the Director of Global Marketing for an online English education platform. The work that we do is purposeful, relational, and deeply rewarding -- I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity to step into this role and to do work in some of the most incredible places on earth! As much as I love the work that I get to do, I also believe that many of the important things in life happen outside of the office. I have the privilege of loving & caring for my husband, our families, our friends, and our church. I can often be found exploring Creation with my husband, making (and eating!) delicious food, and spending time with the young girls I get to mentor.

My four years at CSU were deeply formative. I had the privilege of being a member of the inaugural cohort of Blake Leadership Scholars -- a program which provided me with invaluable relationships and experiences during my time at CSU. It was a grace to be the recipient of the radical generosity of Joe Blake, who believed in me and graciously enabled me to more fully pursue what I felt called to.

Being a part of the CSU community also meant being a part of the Fort Collins community -- something that was an immense gift to me while I was a student. This means that while my time at CSU was marked by incredible opportunities and experiences within the confines of campus, much of my time was spent investing in life and relationships outside of the classroom. I was given several opportunities to spend time overseas while I was a student -- it was these cross-cultural experiences which gave me a heart for the nations and a passion to see lives transformed around the world. It's humbling to see how the educational, vocational, and personal experiences I was given during my time at CSU have all uniquely prepared me for this new season of life."

Peter Wilson"As of August, I have been living in Lincoln, NE with my fiancee and our cat. My free time has been dedicated to wedding planning! We are getting married this upcoming May, which I am super excited about. I am pursuing an English PhD in Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. My disciplinary focus is in Black literature. I also am a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the English department, which helps to fund my studies. I teach two courses of freshman composition!

My time at CSU prepared me for the PhD program because I was able to work closely with Zach Hutchins, who mentored me as both a Blake scholar and English student. In the summer of 2022 I was Dr. Hutchins' research assistant and got to do archival work at the Stowe center in Hartford Connecticut, an experience that has been very beneficial to my graduate studies, where I now do digital archival research for my own writing. I think some of the networking skills we learned in the Blake program has also been impactful to my studies as I prepare to (eventually) enter the job market."
