Community Meet & Greet: Dr. Christina Van Dyke

The CSU Department of Philosophy invites our local faith and secular community members to join us for a Meet & Greet with each of the four finalists for the Willette Professorship in Catholic Studies. All engagement events will be held in the Seminar Room of the Smith Alumni Center (701 W. Pitkin St, Canvas Stadium).

On Thursday, March 24, we welcome Dr. Christina Van Dyke, a Visiting Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University and Emerita Professor of Philosophy at Calvin College. Professor Van Dyke specializes in medieval philosophy and the philosophy of gender. Her work combines these two areas and challenges the idea that women didn’t do philosophy in the Middle Ages. She has written extensively on Thomas Aquinas and Contemplative Philosophy. Her book, A Hidden Wisdom: Medieval Contemplatives on Self-Knowledge, Reason, Love and the Will, Persons, and Immortality will be released by Oxford University Press in October.

Professor Van Dyke has been an avid proponent of public facing philosophy, discussing issues from vampires to gendered eating to contemplation to Aquinas’ views on happiness.
