Biography
Connor McHugh (he/him/his) is a master’s student in Journalism and Media Communication at Colorado State University, currently pursuing his third degree from CSU. He previously earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Media Communication and a Master of Conservation Leadership from the Warner College of Natural Resources.
Connor’s academic work centers on media production as a tool for advancing environmental communication. His research explores the role of visual storytelling, documentary filmmaking, and strategic messaging in addressing conservation challenges. He is particularly interested in the intersections of media, tourism, and sustainability and examining how communication can shape public perceptions, behaviors, and policies related to natural resource use and protection.
Much of Connor’s work is grounded in place-based communication strategies, with a focus on connecting inland communities, such as those in Colorado, to global ocean sustainability issues through the lens of river systems. Originally from Long Island, New York, his passion for water, coasts, and climate resilience drives both his creative and academic pursuits.
Professionally, Connor has contributed to science and conservation media production with Colorado State University, the National Park Service’s Oceans and Coastal Resources Program, and NOAA’s Physical Sciences Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. After graduating, he plans to continue making a meaningful impact in environmental communication and education, with a focus on ocean conservation, sustainable tourism, and public policy.
