Biography
Hello! I am Victoria Ama Obeng (she/her). I am a first-year Ethnic Studies MA student in the Department of Race, Gender and Ethnic Studies at Colorado State University. I earned my B.A. in political science and geography from the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana.
My research interests focus on sexual violence, child labor, child health, and child maltreatment. I am particularly interested in examining how social, cultural, and political structures perpetuate harm against children and how advocacy, education, and legal frameworks can foster protection and justice.
I became interested in this field through community advocacy projects that I initiated and led in Ghana, which focused on gender equality, youth development, and child protection. These initiatives exposed me to the realities of exploitation and systemic neglect faced by children and motivated my ongoing commitment to advancing their rights and well-being through both academic and practical interventions.
During my graduate studies, I hope to strengthen my research and writing skills, publish my work, and present at conferences on human rights and child protection. I also aim to collaborate with faculty and community organizations supporting children’s welfare. My work connects with the department’s focus on intersectionality, social justice, and advocacy.
After completing my degree, I plan to pursue a law degree specializing in child rights and international human rights law to become a child rights lawyer and advocate. I also aspire to establish and run a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to supporting and protecting vulnerable children through education, legal assistance, and community empowerment initiatives.
Outside of my academic work, I enjoy engaging in community outreach programs, mentoring young people, and organizing educational workshops for children and women. In my leisure time, I love playing games, watching documentaries, dancing, listening to music, and spending time with friends and family.
