The Council of Nicaea decided that all Christians should celebrate Easter on the Sunday following the first full moon of spring. This seemingly simple formula has, nonetheless, caused controversy for 1700 years, as reflected in the different calendars in use by the Catholic and Orthodox churches today. In 1997 the World Council of Churches proposed a unified date for Easter following precise astronomical calculations.

How can an understanding of religious history — and astronomy — shed light on this difficult issue?

Joel Bacon, Fr. Don Willette Chair of Catholic Studies and Professor of Organ
