Dr. Thung-Hong Lin will visit the CSU campus in February as part of CSU’s thematic YEAR of DEMOCRACY. Please join us for Dr. Lin’s talk, “The Art of iWar: Censorship, Disinformation, and Democracy under Attack” on Friday, February 16, from 10:30am–12pm in Richardson Design Center (RDC) Room 120.

In this talk, Thung-Hong Lin will explore the intricate relationships between regime types, internet censorship, online disinformation, and their consequential impacts on politics and society, drawing insights from global databases. The first part of the discussion will delve into the correlation between censorship and the erosion of civil society under authoritarian regimes, with a focus on examples from China and Russia. The second part will highlight the detrimental effects of disinformation campaigns on public health issues, such as the pandemic and vaccination efforts. Lin will also present his recent research, which investigates the asymmetric dissemination of disinformation from autocratic states to democracies. The talk will conclude with an introduction to the theoretical framework of internet politics and relevant studies on the United States.

Thung-Hong Lin is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Sociology, Academia Sinica, and the former Director of the Center for Contemporary China at Tsinghua University (Taiwan). His research interests span social stratification, political sociology, and the sociology of disasters. Lin has received notable awards, including the Golden Tripod Award (National Book Award in Taiwan 2012), the Wu Ta-You Memorial Award (National Young Scholar Award in Taiwan 2015), and the Fulbright Scholarship for 2023-24. Currently, he is serving as the Stanford-Taiwan Social Science fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford for 2023-24.

RDC Room 120 is located on the south side of Richardson Design Center’s north building. Questions? soccomm@colostate.edu
