Tasting Displacement: Food Justice in the Age of Gentrification – Joshua Sbicca, Colorado State University

This talk explores struggles to determine the economic viability and cultural value of urban food and farming spaces, and by extension, who has a right to the city. As cities compete for new residents, local boosters increasingly leverage the appeal of hip cafes, bars, and restaurants, as well as community gardens and urban farms, to attract wealth. In the United States, as well as many other countries, this is a racialized process that disproportionately leads to the displacement of poor Black, Brown, and immigrant communities. Therefore, the fight for food justice necessarily requires integrating fights against gentrification. This talk draws from previous research and lessons about how food is imbricated in the political economy and cultural milieu of gentrification, as well as how the food movement, from farm-to-table foodies to food justice activists, navigate the forces of displacement.
