Biography
*Seeking a 2014 postdoc in privacy/disclosure/ethics*.
Cory is currently pursuing postdoc research opportunities in the areas of privacy, self-disclosure, data mining, ICT policy, and/or ethics. His dissertation explores differences in online disclosure of personally identifying information (PII) between American and Estonians during ecommerce transactions.
Bio:
Stephen Cory Robinson is a 4th-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Journalism and Technical Communication at Colorado State University. Cory previously completed a MA in Communication, and has professional experience in telecommunications, ICTs, advertising, and strategic communication.
Current and future research:
His research interests include online privacy and self-disclosure, online privacy regulation, privacy theory, ethics (especially related to data mining), and ICT policy. Cory's current research explores disclosure of PII during ecommerce transactions, and has proposed a model for understanding the balance of disclosing information in exchange for a benefit (i.e. coupon, monetary incentive). Using a Rawlsian approach, he has also analyzed data mining practices of 3 major American marketing associations, and recommended a framework for protecting personal information utilizing Rawls notion of the least advantaged. His future research will explore the ever-changing nature of what is defined as personal information, specifically given the use of smart infrastructure and smart objects. Lastly, he plans to expand his cross-national dissertation research to additional countries in the EU to further explore online disclosure, as well as inform ICT and privacy policy.
