Biography

Albert Y. Bimper Jr., PhD, is an Associate Professor with appointments in both Ethnic Studies and Sport Management in the College of Liberal Arts. As a university administrator, he presently serves as Assistant Vice President and Senior Associate Athletics Director with oversight of the Student Athlete Support Services and all diversity and inclusion efforts within the Athletics Department at Colorado State. The CSU Athletics Department is home to nearly 400 student-athletes across 16 varsity sports. Additionally, Dr. Bimper serves as the founding director of the Sport Management Program at Colorado State University. Through his leadership, the Sport Management program has been developed to include an undergraduate minor and a graduate program with diverse specialization offerings to target student interests. The curriculum of the Sport Management is accessible to students through face-to-face and online instruction formats. He completed his Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction with a concentration in Cultural Studies in Education at the University of Texas at Austin where he is a Fellow of the Heman Sweatt Center for Black Males. Dr. Bimper holds a M.S. in Sport Psychology from Purdue University and a B.S. in Health & Exercise Science from Colorado State University. Dr. Bimper’s origin of passion in the areas of sport, education and the intersections of race and sport stem from his own experiences as a former collegiate student athlete playing football at Colorado State, playing professionally for the Indianapolis Colts, and while serving student athletes as a coach and mentor. His research and pedagogical interests concern student athlete development, particularly the intersection of race and sport and how they are related to identity and the educational development of student athletes of color. Additionally, an aim of his research and teaching is to be an advocate for social justice and further develop culturally relevant and meaningful educational experiences for student athletes of color. He has published in numerous academic journals spanning the topic areas of intercollegiate athletics, education, cultural studies, and the sociology of sport. He most recent publication is a self-authored book titled Black Collegiate Athletes and the Neoliberal State: Dreaming from Bended Knee.
