Guest Artist: Blake McGee, Clarinet / FREE

Dr. Blake McGee is Associate Professor of Clarinet and Music History at the University of Wyoming. A native of the west coast, Dr. McGee performed as a member of the Portland Opera, Vancouver Symphony, and the Oregon Mozart Players chamber orchestra. He is currently principal clarinet of the Wyoming Symphony. He is a highly active chamber musician performing regularly with the Wyoming Reed Trio and Woodwind Quintet, The Wu-McGee Duo, and as a member of Lights Along the Shore, a trio specializing in original arrangements of eclectic music from around the world. Additionally, he tours annually throughout the country as a recitalist.

As an avid reed-maker and researcher, Dr. McGee has begun developing new methods for evaluating clarinet reeds based on design parameters. In 2009, McGee was invited to present his research methods and findings at the International Clarinet Association’s conference in Portugal. In 2016, he published a book titled “ReedWorks: A Guide to Single Reed Adjustment” that covers a variety of topics on working with single reeds. He regularly provides masterclasses on reed adjustment and reed making for clarinet and saxophone studios at universities nationally and continues to research the topic extensively.

Dr. McGee earned degrees in Clarinet Performance and History from the University of Minnesota and the University of Oregon.
