Dance Visits and Auditions

A successful audition is required to be a dance major at CSU. All dance applicants should submit a program application and audition videos through the Acceptd Audition Portal.

Audition to be a Major

Admission into the B.F.A. in Dance, the B.F.A. in Dance - Dance Education Concentration, and the B.A. in Dance require an audition for and acceptance into the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, as well as acceptance by the CSU Office of Admissions.

If you have questions about this process, please contact SMTD@colostate.edu.

Audition Preparation

Our audition process is virtual! All auditionees, including those attending the in-person visit and audition days, should submit a solo, modern phrase, and ballet phrase with their application in the Acceptd Application Portal. If you are attending an in-person Visit and Audition Day, your interview will be in person; otherwise, you’ll need to schedule a virtual interview after submitting your materials in Acceptd.

Applications are evaluated in Nov. and again in Feb. After that, we accept applications until the program is full. We do waitlist students to keep our class sizes small. We recommend getting your CSU and program applications in as soon as possible!

Please prepare the videos and interview as described below. Wear clothing that allows us to see your body, whether it is leggings and a fitted top or tights and a leotard.

Both the modern and ballet phrases are designed to be done in a relatively small space. Please do not rent studio space to record these videos.

Deadlines

  • Friday, Feb. 16, 2024: Deadline for audition submission and consideration for merit scholarships.
  • Applications submitted after Feb. 16 will be considered on a space-available basis.

Merit Scholarship Consideration

All auditionees will be considered for a merit scholarship. Applicants accepted to the program will be informed if they are a scholarship finalist in their acceptance letter. All scholarship recipients will be notified by March 15.

Notifications

You will be notified of CSU Dance’s decision within three weeks of our application deadlines in Nov. and Feb. If you are not initially accepted into the dance major, you are welcome to enroll in appropriate classes and re-audition at a future time.

Upon admission to CSU, and acceptance as a dance major, transfer students collaborate with the Director of Dance and Academic Success Coordinator to develop a degree plan based on a review of transcript and course equivalencies.

Dance Visits

We look forward to meeting you at an upcoming on-campus or virtual visit. Prospective students (high school juniors, seniors, transfer students, and current CSU students) will meet dance faculty and current dance majors.

Whether you come to campus or meet with us online, dance visits include an overview of our dance program, excerpts from our upcoming Dance Concert performed in our dance spaces, and teaching demonstrations by CSU Dance faculty for prospective students to observe or participate in. Prospective students (and parents/guardians) will be able to ask questions of the faculty and current students during a Q&A session.

Why come to the in-person Dance Experience Visit Day?

You’ll take classes in modern, hip-hop, and ballet taught by CSU dance faculty. You’ll take classes alongside CSU dance majors. You’ll get to talk to current students and faculty, and you’ll see a live performance of choreography in progress for our upcoming concerts. You’ll have the chance to perform the solo portion of your dance major audition in person, and you’ll also complete the audition interview during the event.
