at the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art

Join the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art for Slow Art Day 2023, a global event that celebrates looking at and loving art!

Plus, free mini-sketchbooks and pencils for all participants! While supplies last.

What is Slow Art Day?

Slow Art Day is an annual event in April that invites visitors to slow down with art. Participants are encouraged to spend several minutes with a single artwork and then discuss their experiences with other visitors. It’s that simple!

This global movement was created in 2010 by Phyl Terry, founder of the Reading Odyssey and founder and CEO of Collaborative Gain, and their colleagues in Brooklyn, New York. From the official Slow Art Day website:

“When people look slowly at a piece of art they make discoveries. The most important discovery they make is that they can see and experience art without an expert (or expertise). And that’s an exciting discovery. It unlocks passion and creativity and helps to create more art lovers…

Humans need nothing special before they begin to see art – only to slow down.”

How does Slow Art Day work?

  1. Find a local venue (that’s us!).
  2. Visit us on Saturday, April 15, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., to look slowly at a few pieces of art for ten minutes each (remember, museum admission is always free!).
  3. Discuss your experience with other visitors and museum staff—more “formal” discussions will take place at 11:30am and 3pm!
  4. Have fun!

Museum staff will be in the galleries with free mini-sketchbooks and pencils for visitors and to facilitate discussion. Seating provided.
