Overview of the College of Liberal Arts
Outstanding Faculty and Students
The College prides itself on having a faculty of committed teachers who care about undergraduate students and who value advising and mentoring. Faculty members are also productive scholars and researchers who contribute to the body of knowledge and integrate their contributions into the classroom. We are known nationally as a College that has a highly desirable balance between teaching, advising, and research and scholarship.
The quality of students, as measured by grades, class rank, and standardized test scores, is impressive. Even more impressive is the range of abilities, interests, ages, and backgrounds of our students.
The interchange between undergraduate students and faculty in the College is unusual for a large, comprehensive research university. Faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts teach undergraduates as well as graduate students. Teaching is a significant part of each faculty member's responsibilities, and excellence in teaching is an important component in faculty evaluations. Student/faculty contact is enhanced further by our advising program. All students are assigned to a faculty adviser to discuss courses, semester schedules, and future plans. In short, a wonderful symbiotic relationship exists between faculty and students in the College. From faculty, students acquire the sparks that ignite the life of the mind. From students, professors acquire the enthusiasm and fresh perspectives to keep the flame of inquiry burning brightly.
Innovations in Education Recently added were concentrations in International Studies in the Liberal Arts major. The College also is exploring ways to develop cluster courses and to expand senior capstone courses. The Center for Applied Studies in American Ethnicity continues to develop course offerings as well.
